My name is Mike Byrne and I have worked as an independent photographer and filmmaker for over 20 years. Although I am now based in Victoria, BC, I grew up in Alberta's Rocky Mountains, hiking and skiing, and along the way photographing the famous landscapes and wildlife of the Banff-Canmore-Lake Louise area. Little did I appreciate how lucky I was to grow up in such an incredible place!
Nor did I think I would spend my life making photographs and films. My work has taken me through much of Europe, to Africa, South America, and to 47 American states and all 10 Canadian provinces. I have climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, watched a sunset from the Acropolis, dodged howler monkeys in Brazil, explored the Ngorongoro Crater, and marched with soldiers in American Civil War re-enactments. All in the name of photography.
As part of my work in creating landscape and wildlife photographs, I lead small groups on photography tours in Africa, Europe and North America. These tours offer fabulous opportunities to capture unforgettable images while improving photography skills and learning photo editing techniques.
I am frequently asked for advice about cameras, lenses, and photography techniques. I will always try to answer these questions (time and work schedule permitting) and find that I really enjoy helping people obtain their best possible images. I am a huge believer in hands-on learning and if you take one of my photography tours you'll have a great time making photographs, fine-tuning techniques, and critiquing images.
I have a lot of stories to tell and I love to share them -- that's why my gallery is called Eloquent Art. Not that I'm particularly eloquent -- chatty would be more accurate but far less interesting. So I 'm eloquent.
One of my favourite stories concerns a small school in Karatu, Tanzania. For the past year I've raising money to build a library for the school and community. So far, I've raised enough money to build the library and the structure is nearing completion. There's lot's of stories about this project on my Facebook page and on a Facebook group I started called "Let's Build a Library."
